Radford Edges Men's Soccer, 1-0

Patrick Colas scored in the 50th minute to lift host Radford to a 1-0 victory over High Point Saturday night in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The Panthers held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and were even in shots (12-12), but were unable to come up with an equalizer and dropped to 5-7-0 (0-4-0 Big South). Radford improves to 4-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Big South play.

"I thought it was a very even game," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "We felt like we dominated the game in the first half and we had the better chances. We had two one-on-one situations in the first half where their goalie [Omar Zinoveev] came out and made big saves for them."

The lone goal of the game came when the Highlanders' Andres Hernandez served a pass into the box to Colas, who fired a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

HPU had several chances to tie the score, including a blast midway through the second half from freshman Josh Windley, but Zinoveev (who stopped six shots) made a spectacular diving save to keep HPU off the board. Windley had four shots to lead the High Point offense, while Chris Archer added two.

Panther keeper Chris Michener made three saves.

"They came out in the second half and scored, and we went right back at them," Broadley said. "It might sound strange, but I feel like it was one of our better performances tonight. We felt like we put ourselves in the position to win, but we couldn't put the ball in the net and that's what counts."

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday at Virginia Tech. Kickoff in Blacksburg is set for 7:00 pm.
