Men's Soccer Tops Longwood, 4-2

Chris Archer scored two goals in an 18-second span and added an assist, while Josh Windley and Patrick Althoff added second-half scores to lead High Point to a 4-2 victory over Longwood Wednesday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Panthers improve to 5-6-0, and have now surpassed their win total from all of last season (4-14-2). The Lancers, an NCAA Division I independent, fall to 0-11-0.

Longwood keeper Matt VanOekel made six saves, while HPU's Chris Michener made three saves to record his first win of the year in goal (1-0-0).

HPU scored the game's first four goals, beginning with Archer's perfect bicycle shot at the 23:31 mark of the first half, which came off assists from Windley and Richard Hanson. Windley tallied a goal and two assists on the night.

Archer made it 2-0 moments later when he found the net again, this time off a cross from Windley.

High Point tacked on a third goal in the 48th minute when Windley beat VanOekel top-shelf. Kyle De Klerk recorded the first of his two assists on the score, and Archer also was credited with an assist on the play.

Althoff gave the Panthers a 4-0 cushion in the 51st minute when he scored off a long pass from De Klerk.

Longwood, a recent addition to the NCAA Division I ranks, got on the board with a 78th-minute goal by Stuart Bertsch (unassisted, on a free kick) and a 87th-minute tally by Leon Malca (assisted by Bertsch).

HPU held a 20-16 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in shots-on-goal.

The Panthers visit Big South rival Radford Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm. Longwood hosts Mount St. Mary's on Sunday evening (7:00 pm).
