Volleyball Knocks Off Gardner-Webb, 3-1

Box Score

Jamie Kaufman had 19 kills and Lindsey Pickens (12 kills, 10 digs) and Michelle Feiser (48 assists, 11 digs) to lead High Point past Gardner-Webb, 3-1, Wednesday night in volleyball action in Boiling Springs.

The Panthers (11-9) won their third match in two days by a linescore of 30-27, 30-23, 24-30, 30-21. Gardner-Webb dips to 4-15.

Ashley Johnson had 10 kills and three aces, while Kim Anderson led HPU defensively with 13 digs.

"We played well enough to win tonight," HPU head coach Chad Esposito said. "We were a little bit up and down with our intensity and focus. Playing on the road is not the easiest thing to do, but we're finding ways to win and that's all that matters."

Four Panthers hit at least 35 percent: Feiser (.600), Pickens (.474), Rachel Schamberger (.385 on seven kills) and Johnson (.350). As a team, the Panthers out-hit the Bulldogs, .293 to .205. HPU also hit better than .300 in three of the four games.

"Ashley and Lindsey led our hitting on a very efficient night," Esposito said.

HPU trailed 26-24 in game one before finishing the game on a 6-1 run to win 30-27 on a Johnson kill.

The Panthers rode four service aces in game two to widen an 18-15 lead to 26-17 thanks to three kills by Kaufman and an Anderson ace, and evetually went up 2-0 with a 30-23 win. For the match, High Point had 12 service aces, while the Bulldogs were victimized by 15 service errors.

After GWU notched a 30-24 win in game three, High Point jumped out in game four to a 13-6 lead cruised to a 30-21 win. A kill by Kaufman down the line sealed the match.

"Defensively, we hustled and picked balls up," Esposito said.  "We were a little out of sync on offense -- sometimes we did something well and then struggled on the very next point.

"Gardner-Webb is a very improved team, and so are we. We're up and down, but tonight we were up enough to come out with a win."

HPU hosts Liberty on Friday night (7:00 pm) before hosting a trti-match on Saturday. The Panthers meet Radford at 2:00 pm and face Savannah State at 7:00 pm.
