Campbell Outlasts Men's Soccer In OT, 2-1

Willy Guadarrama scored 5:01 into the first overtime period to lift Campbell to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over High Point Saturday in nonconference action in Buies Creek.

Chris Archer scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 62nd to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead, but Campbell tied it in the 63rd minute and got the golden-goal from Guadarrama in overtime to claim the win.

The homestanding Camels improve to 4-8-1, while the Panthers drop to 6-9-1 on the season.

High Point played into extra time for the fourth-straight contest. The Panthers defeated Liberty 3-2 on Tuesday night on Archer's penalty kick two minutes into overtime.

Camel keeper Brandon Kirksey made his only save of the match on a reaction stop on Brindon Hall's one-timer in the 93rd minute to keep the contest going. The chance was set up when Archer raced down the left sideline, beat three defenders and served the ball to Hall, but Kirksey stopped the shot at the line.

Guadarrama ended the game just 2:39 later on a counter-attack. The winner came when Devin Sheppard fed Alex Bruemmer near midfield. Bruemmer split the High Point defense. Guadarrama ran on to the pass, touched the ball to the side of HPU keeper Chris Michener, then blasted a right-footed shot into the roof of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the year.

For the sixth-straight year, the Camels and Panthers played a tight contest. Neither team has scored more than two goals against the other since the in-state rivals resumed their series in 1999.

"It's a disappointing result," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "We felt like we had a good week of training coming off the Liberty win, but we came out a little flat.

"Still, we were in it and took the lead on a great goal by Archer. We felt we were in a good position to win it, but only a minute afterwards allowed a goal because of poor defending in the back and midfield. Unfortunately that was the story of the game on our part."

Despite holding a 7-0 advantage in shots at intermission, the Camels were unable to hit the net in the first half. In the 13th minute, David Comito whipped a left-footed cross into the box, but Chad Aboud's header banged off the crossbar.

One minute later, Michener had to dive to his right to save K.K. Lima's overhead kick. Just over a minute later, Guadarrama broke in free behind the defense, but Michener's challenge at the top of the area forced the freshman to lift his shot over the bar.

Archer's attempt just 15 seconds into the second half was the Panthers' first attempt of the game. Archer then put High Point in front in the 62nd minute when Hall played a pass down the left flank to Patrick Althoff, who drove a low cross into the area. Archer then hit the net with a volley from about 10 yards.

Archer's goal sent Campbell to a home field deficit for the first time since Sept. 29. The Camels did not trail in home victories over Elon, Stetson and Jacksonville earlier this month.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Lightner answered with his first career goal just 34 seconds later. Bruemmer's right-footed shot in the High Point box was blocked, but Lightner netted the rebound to equalize after 62 minutes.

Campbell nearly pushed in front in the 85th minute when Lima beat Michener, but not the left post with an effort inside the box.

Just 2:22 into the overtime period, Archer dribbled into the box near the left goal line, then squared to Hall, but Kirksey was able to get his elbow on Hall's volley and the ball slid just wide of the left post.

Campbell finished with a 19-5 edge in shots.

"It was a close game, and it's disappointing because it's one we really felt we could win on the road," Broadley said.

HPU returns to action Wednesday night at top-ranked UNC Greensboro. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
