High Point and Elon played to a 1-1 draw Friday night in men's soccer action at Albion Millis Stadium.
Patrick Althoff scored for HPU in the 63rd minute, while Douglas Boateng tied things up for Elon in the 86th minute.
The two old rivals played to a draw for the ninth time in their history. The Panthers lead the all-time series, 24-7-9.
Following a scoreless first half, High Point (5-8-1) got on the board when Chris Archer played the ball to Brindon Hall inside the box, who crossed it to Althoff at the far post. Althoff rocketed a shot into the back of the net from close range for his fourth goal of the season and a 1-0 Panther lead.
The Phoenix (4-6-4) would tie things up just four minutes from the end of regulation, when Fabyan Saxe played a through ball into the box which Boateng slightly re-directed past HPU keeper Chris Michener for the equalizer. Brandon Hayes was also credited with an assist on the play.
Neither team was able to come up with a sudden-victory game-winner in the 20 minutes of overtime, although the Panthers came close when Alex Thompson's header off a corner kick was saved in the 109th minute by Elon keeper Taylor Saxe, who leapt high to grab the shot and preserve the draw.
Michener made three saves in goal for HPU, while Taylor Saxe stopped five shots for Elon.
HPU held a 6-4 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Elon posted a slim 16-13 advantage in shots.
Both teams return to action Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. The Panthers visit Big South Conference foe Liberty in Lynchburg, Va., while Elon makes the short trip to meet Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
