Bailey Allman scored on a penalty kick less than two minutes into overtime to give host Virginia Tech a 1-0 win over High Point Tuesday night in men's soccer action in Blacksburg.
The Panthers (5-8-0) fought tooth-and-nail against the Hokies, who upset No. 1-ranked Duke last week. Tech improves to 7-5-0 on the season.
Neither team was able to find the net in regulation, leading to the pivotal overtime period. Chris Michener and Matt Long combined for a shutout in regulation in goal for HPU.
The Hokies out-shot the Panthers by a 15-7 count, but the teams were even (3-3) in shots-on-goal.
"It was an absolutely superb performance, and a heartbreaker at the same time because we were right there with them in every department," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "We were without three starters due to injury, but some of our players stepped up and played very well."
Patrick Althoff and Gordon Smith led the Panthers with two shots apiece. Chris Archer had the other shot on goal.
"It was just a great team effort under adversity," Broadley said. "It's hard to single anyone out, because the whole team played well. But at the same time it's very disappointing to lose, especially in overtime."
High Point hosts rival Elon Friday night at Albion Millis Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
