Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener To UNC Greensboro

UNC Greensboro scored all three of its goals in the first half for a 3-0 win over High Point in men's soccer action at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Spartans improve to 1-1 this season, while the Panthers are 0-1 after Wednesday night's season opener.

Egill Atlason got the Spartans on the board first in the 8th minute when he streaked down the right side of the field toward the goal and laced a shot past High Point keeper Matt Long into the left corner of the net for a 1-0 UNCG lead. The Spartans made it 2-0 four minutes later when Randi Patterson scored from 25 yards away after a pass from James Goodman gave him a one-on-one opportunity.

UNCG increased its lead to 3-0 in the 38th minute on Pat Farrell's free kick from 22 yards out in the center of the field.

Long made six saves in goal for the Panthers, while UNCG's Joe Crump stopped three shots en route to his first shutout of the year.

Alex Thompson and Chris Archer had two shots apiece for the Panthers, who were outshot 18-9 as a team.

The Panthers will look to rebound this weekend on the road against Marshall (0-1), which lost 2-1 at home to St. Peter's on Monday. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm Friday night in Huntington, W.Va.
