High Point held visiting Radford without a field goal for more than 16 minutes and Misty Brockman scored 13 points to lead the Panthers to a 59-45 win over Radford Wednesday night in the opening round of the 2003 Advance Auto Parts Women's Basketball Championship in the Millis Center.
The Panthers (17-11) advance to meet second-seeded Elon (19-9) in Saturday night's semifinal (8:00 pm) at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va. Radford finishes the season at 9-18.
Following Amanda Neby's jumper with 15:42 left in the first half to give the Highlanders a 9-4 lead, Radford missed its next 17 shots from the floor. The Panthers obviously took advantage and put together a 23-4 run to head to intermission with a comfortable 27-13 lead.
RU's Heather Perez nailed a three-pointer with 19:23 to play in the game to break the Highs' field-goal drought, which officially lasted 16 minutes, 19 seconds. Radford wouldn't get within 11 points in the second half as HPU coasted to victory behind solid defense and adequate shooting.
The Panthers, who outrebounded Radford 42-35, forced 21 turnovers.
Neby led all scorers with her 22-point, 12-rebound performance. Brandy Allen also finished in double-figures with 11 points.
Cebronica Scott and Stephanie Scott, who like Brockman played in their final game in the Millis Center, added nine points apiece.
In the first semifinal Saturday night, top-seeded and six-time defending champion Liberty faces No. 7-seeded Coastal Carolina at 6:00 pm.
