Adam Schwartz's goal in the 106th minute lifted host UNC Asheville to a 1-0 double-overtime win over High Point Wednesday afternoon in Big South action in Asheville.
The Panthers fall to 4-12-2 (2-4-1 in the Big South), while the Bulldogs improve to 8-7-2 (4-3-0).
Schwartz redirected a perfectly-placed ball from a free kick by Greg Garrison midway through the second overtime, and headed the ball into the right-hand corner of the goal at 105:51.
The Panthers dominated much of the game, but could not find the back of the net and finished up the Conference season on a sour note.
"We blew a good opportunity today to finish in the top half of the conference, and hope that we can learn from our mistakes," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said.
The Panthers' best chance came in the first ten minutes after Richard Hanson headed Luke Lemanski's corner kick across the six-yard box, narrowly missing three onrushing players. Kenzo Tochiki and Matt Wood led the Panthers with three and two shots respectively. Wood headed inches wide from a Tochiki cross late in the second half.
UNCA edged HPU in shots, 13-8.
Both teams were reduced to ten men with ten minutes remaining after Lemanski and Asheville's Greg Yelverton were given their marching orders. The Panthers looked the more likely side to score, but a defensive lapse allowed Schwartz to sneak in and win the game.
Matt Long made five saves in more than 105 minutes of action in goal for the Panthers, while Ben Betsalel stopped three shots in net for UNCA.
"I thought we defended well today and it was a mental lapse that cost us," Long said. "We have a young team that is still learning and we are confident of putting things together in time to put ourselves in with a chance in the tournament next week".
High Point closes the regular season Sunday afternoon against rival Elon in Elon. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
