Men's Basketball Cruises Past Allen, 107-71

Jerry Echenique and Javier Palacios scored 17 points apiece and High Point opened the Bart Lundy era by putting three digits on the scoreboard in a 107-71 win over Allen Friday night at the Millis Center.

High Point eclipsed the 100-point plateau for the first time since a 103-62 win over Lees-McRae in 1999, and collected the highest scoring total for a Panther squad since a 107-71 win over Lees-McRae in the 1998-99 season.

The Panthers (1-0) jumped out to a 14-2 lead, and didn't let the Yellow Jackets (1-5) get within nine points the rest of the way. HPU's biggest lead of the half was 23 points at 41-18 following a Landon Quick layup with 2:44 to play before halftime. HPU scored 36 of its 47 first-half points in the paint and took a 47-26 advantage to the locker room.

It was more of the same in the second half for HPU, which shot 68 percent (26-for-38) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Panthers scored 60 points after halftime and led by as many as 43 points following a Palacios free throw with 7:36 left that made it 93-50.

HPU eclipsed the 100-point plateau on an Echenique layup with 3:13 to play.

In addition to his 17 points, Palacios tallied four steals and seven assists without committing a turnover. Echenique was one rebound shy of a double-double after collecting nine boards.

Three other High Point players reached double-figures: Zione White (16 points), Danny Gathings (14 points) and Chris Meeks (11 points). Quick added six assists and three steals in his first collegiate game.

Allen, an NAIA school from Columbia, S.C., got a game-high 19 points from Theseus Legree and 18 points from Melvin Rogers. The Panthers outrebounded the Yellow Jackets, 48-32, and swiped 17 steals in the process.

It was Lundy's first game as HPU's head coach following five successful seasons at Queens University of Charlotte.

High Point now begins an ambitious road trip that will see the Panthers face three big-name foes in six days. The Panthers visit Clemson on Monday (7:00 pm) before a Wednesday date at Michigan and a game the following Sunday at Virginia.
