Liberty Bounces Men's Soccer, 2-1

High Point's men's soccer team saw its season end with a 2-1 loss to Liberty in the first round of the 2003 Big South Men's Soccer Championship Thursday in Radford, Va.

The Panthers outshot the Flames, 10-7, but scored just Matt Wood's lone goal in the 72nd minute.

The third-seeded Flames (8-8-1) took a 1-0 lead on Matt Morris's goal in the 15th minute, and outshot sixth-seeded HPU, 3-0, before halftime.

The Panthers (4-14-2) came out renewed following the break and tied things up in the 72st minute when Wood lofted a shot over the outstretched arms of Liberty keeper K.J. Sabotchick. But the Flames regained the lead just minutes later on a header in the box by Darryl Roberts. Pavel Cancura was credited with the assist on the play, which came in the 77th minute.

Playing with a sense of urgency, HPU turned up the pressure and took the final four shots of the match, but the Panthers were unable to connect for the equalizer. The Panthers outshot the Flames 10-4 and held an 8-0 advantage in corners in the second half.

Sabotchick stopped four shots, while Panther keeper Matt Long made one save.

Liberty advances to meet Birmingham-Southern in Friday's second semifinal. Top-seeded Coastal Carolina faces Winthrop in the opener (4:00 pm).
