High Point battled No. 11-ranked Coastal Carolina tooth and nail before the Chanticleers scored three times after intermission to break open a close game and down the Panthers, 4-0, on Senior Night at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Chants won their seventh match in a row and improve to 14-2-0 (6-1-0 in Big South play), while the Panthers fall to 4-11-2 (2-3-1).
CCU got on the board in the 7th minute of play when Randy Owen fed Boyzzz Khumalo on a breakaway. Khumalo pushed a shot past HPU keeper Matt Long for a 1-0 Chanticleer lead.
Long made four saves in the first half to keep the score close, and the Chants led just 1-0 at halftime. CCU held a 7-3 advantage in shots in the opening frame.
But the Chants broke through for three goals midway through the second half to take a commanding advantage. Jordie Hughes made it 2-0 in the 54th minute from 10 yards out off an assist from Joseph Ngwenya, Mubarike Chisoni scored off a Hughes assist to put CCU ahead 3-0 in the 63rd minute, and Francis McCardle completed the scoring on a header in the 70th minute.
Long stopped seven shots in 80 minutes in net for the Panthers, while Andrew Paxton and Mark Lenahan each had one save apiece for the Chants.
The game was the final home contest for Panther seniors Gareth McLelland, Kirk Rudder, Kenzo Tochiki, Keith Wines, and Matt Wood.
High Point visits UNC Asheville in the Big South finale for both teams Wednesday afternoon (3:00 pm).
