Winthrop Holds Off Men's Soccer For Tight 1-0 Win

Vali Arnason's goal in the 22nd minute stood up and proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop handed High Point its first Big South loss of the season, 1-0, Wednesday night at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Panthers outshot the Eagles, 12-9, but were unable to find their way onto the scoreboard depsite a flurry of second-half scoring chances.

Winthrop improves its record to 7-1-1 (2-1-0 in Big South play), HPU drops to 2-7-1 (1-1-1).

Arnason's goal, his eighth of the season (tying him for the Big South lead), came off a corner kick from Lloyd Gofton and a touch from Michael Chumah. Arnason took the pass and headed it past HPU keeper Matt Long just in front of the goal line in the 22nd minute.

Trailing 1-0 in the second half, High Point played with a sense of urgency and had several decent scoring chances before taking their best shot in the 72nd minute. Kenzo Tochki's corner kick found its way through the Winthrop defense to Richard Hanson, who uncorked a shot to beat Winthrop keeper Steve Winton, but Gofton was there to block the shot at the line and literally save the game for the Eagles.

High Point's final flurry came in the 85th minute, when Tochiki played another corner right in front of the goal, but Hanson's shot was blocked away.

Winton recorded his second shutout of the season and made six saves in net, while Long stopped two shots for HPU.

The Panthers collected seven shots on goal to three for the Eagles.

HPU welcomes Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon for Homecoming at Albion Millis Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm.
