High Point split a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Panthers took the first game 2-0, and dropped the second game 9-8.
Kevin Burch threw a complete-game shutout in Game 1, allowing just three hits in seven innings. The junior (4-1) fanned 11 hitters out of the 24 he faced.
The Panthers (8-7) got both of their runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Matt O'Neil led off with a triple to left, and scored on an infield hit by John Cavanaugh, who then stole second and advanced to third on an error by Mountaineer catcher Chris Staub.
In Game 2, Mount St. Mary's (3-4) drew first blood early with two runs in its first at-bat. John DiGirolamo scored on a single by Jason Weszka, and Weszka came across on a sacrifice fly by Staub.
But the Panthers countered with four runs in their half of the opening frame on a grand slam by senior Andy Harney. Chris Vinar, Michael Lowman, and Ken Keesee all came around to score on the bomb to right-center.
The Mountaineers added three more in the 2nd off Panther starter David White (0-2). High Point countered with a pair in the bottom of the 3rd, but MSM put a 4-spot on the board in the 5th to seal the deal, and a late Panther rally fell short.
