Paul Bellacqua punched in a pair of first-half goals as the Phoenix soared past High Point 2-0 in Big South Conference men's soccer action at Rudd Field Wednesday afternoon.
Bellacqua connected on a pass from Stephen Hockman to draw first blood just 23:10 into the contest. Steven Aparicio found Bellacqua for the second goal at the 27:47 mark as Elon (3-8, 1-3 Big South) claimed its first league victory of the season.
The Panthers (4-7-1. 0-2-1) out-shot the Phoenix 12-11 for the game while both teams attempted six shots on goal. Daniel Kitching attempted three shots, including two on goal, to lead the High Point attack.
Bellacqua fired six of Elon's 11 shots and four of the Phoenix's six shots on goal while doubling his goal total of the season. His four goals lead all Elon scorers for the year.
Phoenix goalie Paul Reuter played 78:02, snagging four saves. Reuter exited the contest with a jammed thumb late in the first half, receiving a brief breather from back-up Kyle Ostendorf before returning. Panther goaltender Eric Lona grabbed four saves.
