March 24, 2012 – Emery breaks 200-meter record in VertKlasse Meeting

Sophomore Evan Emery broke a 29-year-old HPU record in the 200-meter, running a time of 20.87 into a headwind at the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University.

Emery got out strong and bested a field that included Jamaal Torrance, who won a gold medal as part of the United States 4x400 relay team at the 2008 World Championship. Emery's time of 20.87 shattered the HPU record of 21.45 set by Kent Sides in 1983.

Emery continued his standout year at the Florida Relays a few weeks later. He ran 10.28 in the 100-meter dash at the Florida Relays on Friday, the exact time needed to provisionally qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials. He placed fifth overall in the prestigious event in Gainesville, Fla.

Emery placed third in his heat and fifth overall in the 100-meter dash at the Florida Relays. Florida's Jeff Demps and Florida State's Kemar Hyman ran quicker than Emery in the first heat. In Emery's heat, he was bested only by post-collegiate sprinter Chris Hargrett (10.19) and Jackson State's Brent Lee (10.25). Demps is a five-time NCAA champ in the sprints.

At the NCAA Preliminaries on May 24, Emery qualified for the second round in the 100-meter dash. Emery placed 12th overall and second in his heat of the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.48. The top three finishers in each heat automatically qualified for the second round.
