Ty Nurse joined the High Point staff as a graduate assistant in the summer of 2023. Over the past two season with the Panthers, he helped High Point compile and overall record of 56-15 with a 27-5 Big South record. He helped the staff lead HPU to its first ever-NCAA tournament appearance as the No. 13 seed and matched up against No. 4 seed Purdue. He helped the staff turn around an under .500 program and guided the Panthers to back-to-back outright Big South Regular Season titles for the first time in program history. High Point became the first team in the Big South since 2011 (Coastal Carolina) to win back-to-back outright regular season titles.
HPU finished with an overall record of 29-6 during the 2024-25 season, which tied for the most wins in Big South program history (Winthrop, 2006-07) and the most wins in HPU program history. The Panthers finished the regular season with a 26-5 record and a 14-2 league record. The 26 regular-season wins is the most in program history and tied the Big South regular-season wins record with Coastal Carolina's 2010-11 season (26-4). The Panthers also set the best win percentage in Division I era with an 88-percent win percentage in conference play and an 84-percentage win percentage in the regular season.
Prior to High Point, Nurse spent the past two years at his alma mater, Texas Tech University. As a graduate assistant at Texas Tech, Nurse helped mentor student-athletes, assisted with skill development on the floor as well helped with film breakdown and academics. During his time at Texas Tech, the Red Raiders reached a Sweet 16. Nurse also worked with First Team All-Big12 selection Bryson Williams, current pro Clarence Nadolny and NBA prospects TJ Shannon, Kevin McCullar and Adonis Arms, and Elijah Fisher, Jaylon Tyson, and Fardaws Aimaq.
Prior to rejoining his alma mater, Nurse served as a graduate assistant at Creighton from 2018 to 2021. There he helped mentor student-athletes, assisted with skill development on the floor as well helped with film breakdown and academics. Creighton found success during his time there, securing its first ever share of a Big East Regular Season Title in 2019-20 and advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21. Nurse worked with several talented student-athletes while at Creighton including Marcus Zegarowski, Ty-shon Alexander, Denzel Mahoney, Christian Bishop, and Ryan Kalkbrenner.
Nurse is originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and has worked with the Jr Canadian National Team Programs.
Prior to coaching, Nurse had an acclaimed playing career in both the collegiate and professional levels. As a professional, Nurse played two seasons, winning a championship with the Halifax Hurricanes in 2015-16. He spent his first year professionally with Uni Baskets Paderborn in Germany Pro A.
Prior to playing professionally, Nurse completed his collegiate career at Texas Tech, playing there from 2011 to 2013.
Nurse represented his country and competed for the Canadian Junior National Team, placing seventh at the 2009 U19 World Championships in New Zealand. He also won a bronze medal with Canada at the 2009 FIBA world qualifier in Argentina and led Canada to the 2009 Douai World Tournament title in Northern France.
Prior to his time at Texas Tech, Nurse spent two years at Midland College, a Junior College. While there, his sophomore season he averaged 9.1 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists, while shooting 82 percent from the free throw line for the season. He earned an All-Conference and All-Region honors after leading the Midland College Chaps (31-4) to the NJCAA national title game. As a freshman in 2009-10, Nurse averaged 5.6 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
He began his playing career at Decatur Christian under Coach Alan Huss from 2006-2008, who is now the current High Point Head Coach.
