Geoffrey Staton joined the High Point University athletic training staff in 2010 and works primarily with the HPU men's basketball team. He also serves as a clinical preceptor in the undergraduate athletic training education program.
In Staton's first season at HPU, he worked with two of the Panthers' most successful programs. The men's soccer team went 16-4-1 overall and won the Big South Regular Season Championship for the first time with an 8-0-0 league record. The women's lacrosse team played its inaugural season in 2011 and went 15-4 overall and won the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament. The Panthers' 15 wins were most ever by a first-year NCAA Div. I program.
Staton joined High Point after two years at the University of Kentucky, where he worked primarily with the nationally-ranked women's gymnastics team and dance team. He also volunteered as the graduate assistant athletic trainer for the nationally-ranked men's basketball team and worked at several summer camps. As athletic trainer for the gymnastics and dance teams, Staton was responsible for evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of all injuries and coordinated his efforts with team doctors and surgeons.
Staton earned his master's degree in Athletic Training from Kentucky after earning his bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Athletic Training from the University of North Carolina. His master’s thesis focused on ankle range of motion and dynamic balance in athletes and physically active individuals with chronic ankle instability. Staton worked as an undergraduate athletic training student while at UNC, assisting with coverage of the track & field, softball, men's soccer and men's lacrosse teams as well as UNC camps and local high schools.
In the summer of 2007, Staton worked as an athletic training intern with the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats, helping with coverage for all pre-draft workouts and summer league practices.
Staton is a Certified Athletic Trainer and a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association. Originally from Greensboro, N.C., he now resides in High Point.
