Ahmad Dorsett joined the High Point University men’s basketball team as assistant coach in 2011 and made an immediate impact, helping land several highly-touted recruits while also providing significant support on the court during practice and in games.

HPU’s improvement included the Big South North Division title and an appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2012-13. The Panthers executed a major turnaround in 2013-14, winning 12 of their final 14 games to win the Big South regular season outright and earn the league’s automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament.

In 2014-15, Dorsett helped HPU set new program recrrds for wins (23) and league wins (13) while earning the fitst post-season win in school history. In 2015-16, the Panthers matched that league win total (13), set a new program record for Big South road wins (7) and reached the NIT for the second time in  three seasons.

The Purple & White were one of just four programs out of 351 in the nation to have won four-straight conference titles. The others were Kansas, Gonzaga and Stephen F. Austin.

Dorsett’s mid-Atlantic ties have helped solidify the Panthers’ recruiting. Dorsett played at George Mason and was formerly an assistant coach at Mount St. Mary’s University.

Dorsett’s final season of college ball at George Mason was HPU head coach Scott Cherry’s first as assistant coach under Jim Larranaga. Dorsett played for the Patriots from 1996-2000, where he was an All-Rookie selection, team captain and led his team from a 19-35 record his first two seasons to a 38-22 record in his last two seasons. The last two years included two CAA regular-season championships, a CAA Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1998-99.

Dorsett’s previous collegiate assistant coaching positions included Longwood (2003-04), Mount Olive (2008-09), Bowie State (2009-10) and Mount St. Mary’s (2010-11). He was head coach at Freedom High School in Woodbridge, Va., for four seasons.

Originally from Long Island, N.Y., Dorsett earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and Health Promotion from George Mason in 2000.

Ahmad and his wife Debbie have three daughters: Leiannah, Ahmara & Timiah.
