HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team fell to Longwood University 7-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 2, Longwood 7
Records: High Point (30-17, 12-6), Longwood (28-20, 10-8)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Really disappointing to drop this series at home but we were just simply beat by the better team today. I thought Aidan [Paul] was fantastic and gave us every chance to win the game, unfortunately we couldn't cash in on the many opportunities we had to drive runs home. They, on the other hand, scored 5 runs (difference in the game) on 3- 2 out extra base hits. The margin for error and difference in the series like this is razor thin and we came up short. The good news is we have everything we want to accomplish right in front of us and that's all you ask for late in the season. I'm excited to see how our guys respond."
High Point scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by
Justin Ruiz, allowing
Jake McCarter to score from third and put the first run on the board.
Longwood took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth on three hits, but HPU responded in the bottom half of the inning when
Justin Ruiz singled up the middle to score
Jace Kohler from second and tie the game at two.
The Lancers went back in front 4-2 after a two-out, two-RBI triple in the top of the seventh inning. They extended their lead to 7-2 in the top of the eighth on four hits.
That proved to be enough, as Longwood held HPU to two runs and pulled away for a 7-2 victory in game three on Sunday afternoon.
Up Next: High Point will head to UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, May 5 at 6
:00 p.m.
