Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Never upset with a win! But I was disappointed with our focus to start the game. Our pitchers were fantastic all game and we are thankful for that but I didn't like our at bats and we made careless mistakes early that hurt us. The at bats got better from the seventh inning on but that's hard to turn it on and expect good things to happen. In the end, it took a quality at bat by Jace [Kohler] to work a walk and then Marcus [Martin] to get a stolen base for Christian [Smith] to come through with the big hit we needed."
The Aggies scored the first run of the night on a wild pitch, allowing the runner from third to come home and take a 1-0 lead. HPU answered when
Jack Clark stole third, forcing an errant throw that allowed him to score and tie the game.
NC A&T regained the lead in the top of the second on a fielder's choice, followed by a throwing error that brought a run home. High Point evened the score at 2-2 when
Christian Smith delivered a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field, scoring
Seojun Oh in the fourth.
After four scoreless innings of limited action,
Christian Smith sealed the win for the Panthers in the bottom of the ninth with a bloop single, driving in pinch runner
Marcus Martin for the game-winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Aggies.
Dalton Hitt earned his first win of the year in a bullpen effort for HPU, pitching the final two innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
Up Next: High Point will host Radford University for a weekend series starting on Friday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m.
