BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team dropped its mid-week at Campbell University 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Site: Jim Perry Stadium
Score: High Point 4, Campbell 5
Records: High Point (29-15), Campbell (30-14)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Not the result we wanted or expected tonight. It was a well played, back and forth battle between two really good teams. Credit to Campbell for making one more pitch, getting one more big hit, and making one more defensive play than us tonight. I'm hopeful our guys can take away some experience of playing high stakes, meaningful baseball this time of the year to prepare us for the weeks to come."
Back-to-back two-out doubles from
Willie Ponce and
Frank Kelly put the Panthers on the board first in the top of the third inning. Kelly's double found the right-center gap and rolled all the way to the wall, allowing Ponce to score with ease.
The Camels tied the game at one in the fourth inning on an RBI double to the gap, scoring the runner from first base. High Point went back in front, 2-1, in the top of the sixth when Ponce scored on a bases-loaded groundout from
Lane Allen.
Campbell took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on three hits with a double and a single to jump ahead late. HPU tied the game thanks to Kelly's second double down the line, which scored Ponce from first base, before
Seojun Oh knocked in Kelly with an RBI single to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead in the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Camels led off with a triple and eventually brought him home on an infield groundout to tie the game. A double down the right field line then scored the go-ahead run to put Campbell ahead 5-4.
That was enough to hold off the Panthers, despite HPU getting the tying runner on base in the top of the ninth. The Camels held on to defeat High Point 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Up Next: High Point will return to conference play hosting Longwood University for a three-game set starting Friday, May 1 at 6:00 p.m.
