CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team dropped its mid-week game at No. 2 University of North Carolina 9-2 on Tuesday night.
Site: Boshamer Stadium
Score: High Point 2, #2 UNC 9
Records: High Point (26-14), #2 UNC (34-7-1)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "I feel like we missed an opportunity to come to a good environment and play toe to toe with one of the better teams in the country but we simply couldn't get out of our own way tonight. We gave a good team far too many free bases (walks, HBP, and wild pitches) to be able to compete. Offensively, we knew it would be a challenge and we had some spurts where we competed well and had some good at bats but just couldn't get the big hit or at bat when we needed it.
"
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, the Tar Heels got on the board in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. High Point answered in the top of the third when
Jace Kohler slid home safely on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Frank Kelly to cut into the UNC lead 3-1.
UNC responded with six runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits, including a two-run home run, to take a 9-1 lead after four innings.
A throwing error by UNC's catcher to third base while attempting to catch
Frank Kelly stealing allowed Kelly to hustle home and score the Panthers' second run in the top of the seventh.
High Point was unable to generate a rally in the top of the ninth, as the Tar Heels secured the 9-2 victory.
Up Next: High Point will host Virginia Military Institute for a three-game series starting on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m.
