HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University baseball team dropped it's mid-week game 8-0 to Liberty University on Tuesday afternoon.
Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 0, Liberty 8
Records: High Point (7-6), Liberty (8-3)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "I thought Mateo [Wells] and Dalton [Hitt] gave us every opportunity. It's a two-run game in the eighth inning and we didn't give them any hope offensively. It's disappointing because they pitched their tails off and it was a 2-0 game heading into the eighth inning. If our offense showed any sort of heartbeat those first seven innings, I feel like our guys could have continued to keep it where it was. It got away from us a little bit and that happens. Just disappointed in our approach overall. Tip my hat to those guys, they're good. They've pitched well all season, so I'm not surprised by that. We helped them out a lot today and we need to do a better job. We will get to work and try and find some answers."
The game remained scoreless through the first inning before Liberty took a 1-0 lead in the second on an unearned run. High Point had limited chances early, but
Mateo Wells kept the Panthers within reach, working 4.1 innings while allowing just one unearned run and striking out five.
Liberty added a run in the seventh to extend the lead to 2-0. The game broke open in the eighth inning as the Flames scored six runs on five hits, including a grand slam, to push the margin to eight.
High Point finished with four hits, including a double from
Seojun Oh and singles from
Justin Ruiz,
Jack Clark, and
Frank Kelly. The Panthers drew three walks but left six runners on base.
Dalton Hitt and
Jack Carey provided solid relief outings out of the bullpen, while
Dom LaDuke struck out two in his inning of work.
Up Next: High Point will travel down to Gainesville, Florida for a weekend series with No. 9 University of Florida. Game one is scheduled for Friday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m.
