Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "It was a big road win as both teams came in 4-0 in conference. I'm proud of our girls for sticking together for 40 minutes. The key to the game was we only had 11 turnovers, and Longwood really wants to turn you over to score out of their press. Obviously, your point guards have a big part in that. I think Brecken [Snotherly] and Macy [Spencer] also stepped up big in handling the ball and helping us alleviate some of that pressure. Brecken was huge on the boards with nine rebounds, one away from a double-double, but it was definitely a team win today that you love to get on the road."
The Panthers worked through a back-and-forth opening quarter before finding separation late in the first half. After Longwood briefly took the lead early in the second quarter, High Point answered behind the steady shot-making of
Macy Spencer and the strong depth of High Point's bench. Spencer knocked down a pair of three-pointers during the quarter, while the Panthers closed the half on a late push to take a 30-27 advantage into the break.
High Point gained control coming out of halftime, turning defense into offense during a dominant third quarter. The Panthers shot 69.2 percent from the floor in the frame and outscored Longwood 19-8, highlighted by Spencer shooting the triple and consistent finishes in the paint. High Point stretched its lead to double digits midway through the quarter and carried a 49-35 cushion into the fourth.
The Panthers maintained control down the stretch, continuing to win the rebounding battle and answering every Longwood response.
Nevaeh Zavala and
Brecken Snotherly added timely baskets in the fourth quarter as High Point closed out the road victory.
Spencer led all scorers with 22 points, five assists and four rebounds, while Zavala added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Brecken Snotherly chipped in 10 points and nine rebounds, while
Dom Nesland recorded six points, five assists and seven rebounds.
High Point improves to 16-2 overall and 5-0 in Big South play to gain sole possession of first place in the conference.
Up Next: High Point will host Winthrop University on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Qubein Center.
