It was Anderson who ignited the spark for the Panthers' offense in the first two minutes and 12 seconds of the game with a layup and three-pointer for HPU's first five points of the game.
A 7-2 scoring run, capped off by a
Scotty Washington three-pointer, and a steal and slam from Anderson trimmed Winthrop's margin down to three points, 17-14, with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half.
High Point struggled to get a basket to drop until
Braden Hausen buried a triple to get the Panthers back into rhythm, cutting the Eagles' deficit to 48-26.
The Panthers went into the halftime break trailing Winthrop, 53-29. Eight players scored for High Point in the first 20 minutes of action, with Anderson leading the way in scoring with nine points, shooting 3-5 from the field and connecting on both his free-throw attempts.
Out of the halftime break, the Panthers flipped the switch and were quick to gain momentum, jumping out to a 10-0 run, and shaving Winthrop's lead, 53-49. It was
Owen Aquino and
Rob Martin who swung the momentum in HPU's favor, scoring eight of the 10 points to start the second half.
High Point looked to erase Winthrop's deficit, starting a 6-2 scoring drive as
Conrad Martinez converted a pair of free throws, and Anderson and Aquino each recorded a basket to trim Winthrop's advantage, 66-50, with 11:28 left to play.
Chase Johnston came off the bench and provided an instant offense as he helped HPU get within 14 points, 83-69, with 5:43 remaining, after draining three triples in a span of three minutes and seven seconds.
Despite a late surge from the Panthers and HPU outsourcing Winthrop 46-39 in the second-half, High Point was not able to close the gap, suffering its first conference loss of the season, 92-75.
HPU shot 45.2 percent from the field and 70 percent at the free-throw line in the second half, and 39.3 percent overall and 71.4 percent at the charity stripe in 40 minutes of action.
