Head Coach Zach Haines: "It was not a great start tonight and VCU was on top of the game at the beginning, but from 25 minutes on, we were very good. Our staff loved the response and the guys that came off the bench tonight made a fantastic impact. Really good result. We are in a good place heading into Tuesday."
It took the Panthers some time to get their feet under them, but once they did, it was a wrap.
Coming off the bench in the 29th minute,
Celestin Blondel,
Prosper Adagani and
Nick Herb quickly made an impact. In the 40th minute, Blondel sent a cross right and found Adagani's head as he knocked it in to knot the score at 1-all.
Three minutes later, Herb drew a penalty in the box to set up captain
Jefferson Amaya for the penalty kick. The senior drained his first goal of the season into the left corner, giving the Panthers the lead for good.
High Point took the 2-1 advantage into halftime and only added onto it. Again, it was Adagani making his presence known.
This time, it was defensively as the freshman forward pressured the goalkeeper and got his foot on the ball, ricocheting it back to Herb as he struck the one-timer for the senior's first career goal in the 51st minute.
The Panthers took the momentum, out-shooting VCU 9-1 over the final 45 minutes after narrowing the home team, 9-6, in the first half. After an early goal,
Josh Caron didn't allow another one and had four saves.
VCU played with 10 players after a red card was assessed in the 55th minute.
Up Next: The Panthers return to Vert Stadium for a ranked matchup with No. 2 Marshall University on Tuesday, September 9 with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
