Score: No. 9 High Point 3, Longwood 0
Records: High Point (6-0-3, 2-0-0), Longwood (2-5-2, 0-2-0)
Head Coach Zach Haines: "The second-half performance is what we expect from this group. The first half was not good enough despite being ahead 2-0. It gets harder to remain undefeated in the second half of the season obviously, so we have to keep pushing the standards for everything we do. It's a big challenge, but I know that this team and these leaders will keep rising to the occasion."
In an unusual sequence of events, the Panthers got on the scoreboard to gain the 1-0 advantage in the eighth minute after a Longwood clearance struck off
Alfred Baafi's lower back, ricocheting and bouncing into the net for the forward's first goal of the season.
Baafi is the ninth different Panther to score a goal this season.
It hardly took another 10 minutes of play before High Point recorded its second goal after
Daniel Lugo found
Celestin Blondel, who put on a series of cuts before crossing the ball into the box to the back post where
Brendan Krueger was waiting to tap the ball into the net to give HPU the 2-0 lead. After not finding pay dirt in the first seven games, Krueger has now scored a goal in two straight games.
The Panthers outshot the Lancers, 8-3, and shots on goal, 6-0, in the first half. High Point held Longwood to one corner kick in the first half compared to HPU's three.
Eight minutes into the second half, great defense from
Prosper Adagani led to him finding
Chris Niblock on the far side as he would win his 1v1 battle before striking in a left-footed goal into the far left corner for the incredible finish and 3-0 margin in the 53th minute. The goal was the sophomore's second of the season.
HPU cruised to the 3-0 victory to remain undefeated. The Panthers outshot Longwood, 23-4, and held the Lancers to zero shots on goal compared to a season-high 14 shots on goal by HPU.
It was the fourth game this season the Panthers have scored at least three goals, while it was
Josh Caron's third clean sheet. High Point went deep on its bench, playing nine reserve players and seeing three different Panthers net goals.
Up Next: High Point will head to Asheville, N.C., to continue its road trip against UNC Asheville on Saturday, October 4 at 6 p.m.
