WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday night, the High Point University volleyball team brought home a victory over UMBC, 3-0. The Panthers were led by two players in double digit kills as Élodie Lalonde collected 15 kills and
Addison Freeland collected 11 kills.

How it Happened:
Both teams were competitive across all three sets. In set one, Lalonde opened the game strong with two kills.
Maya Bukovcan sparked an early sequence with a kill in the middle to help HPU go up 7-6.
In the next exchanges, UMBC strung together three points, followed by three points from the Panthers to hold a 13-12 lead. Bukovcan put down two kills to give High Point some separation and its largest lead of the set thus far, 16-13.
The middles continued to find the gaps which helped the Panthers stay steady and press on through the set. After leading 21-19, High Point scored four straight points with a Freeland kill, a UMBC setting error, a service ace from
Sydney McKay and a kill from Bukovcan. HPU won set one, 25-19.
In set two, UMBC took a 4-1 advantage. Locking in on the attack,
Remy Catojo set up the Panther offense to take an 8-6 lead before increasing the lead to 12-7. Lalonde, Bukovcan and
Gabby Hill all contributed to the five-point lead with powerful hits.
UMBC attempted to close the gap and brought the game back within two-points at 12-10. High Point kept swinging on the attack and went back up by five with back-to-back kills from Lalonde to make it 18-13.
A few plays later, a big-time double block from Lalonde and Bukovcan extended the Panthers lead to seven late in the set, 22-15.
Gia Padilla and Freeland sealed the set to give HPU the 25-20 win.
High Point dominated in set three and shut down the Retrievers. The Panthers quickly advanced to a 15-6 lead with a 10-2 run. High Point made it hard for UMBC to get in any type of groove which allowed the score to extend, 22-12. Two kills from Lalonde and a kill from Bukovcan finished the game. The Panthers took set two with ease, 25-14 to win the match 3-0.
Extra Stats:
- The Panthers dominated on the block, leading with eight blocks to two against the Retrievers.
- High Point hit .340 as a team compared to UMBC's .200. This is the best the Panthers have hit as a team all season.
- Catojo had a double-double in assists and digs, handing out 14 assists and picking up 13 digs.
- Lalonde also had a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs to pace the team.
