Panthers Bring Home Victory Over UMBC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday night, the High Point University volleyball team brought home a victory over UMBC, 3-0. The Panthers were led by two players in double digit kills as Élodie Lalonde collected 15 kills and Addison Freeland collected 11 kills.

Site: Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena
Score: High Point 3, UMBC 0
Records: High Point (3-7), UMBC (1-8)

How it Happened:

Both teams were competitive across all three sets. In set one, Lalonde opened the game strong with two kills. Maya Bukovcan sparked an early sequence with a kill in the middle to help HPU go up 7-6.

In the next exchanges, UMBC strung together three points, followed by three points from the Panthers to hold a 13-12 lead. Bukovcan put down two kills to give High Point some separation and its largest lead of the set thus far, 16-13.

The middles continued to find the gaps which helped the Panthers stay steady and press on through the set. After leading 21-19, High Point scored four straight points with a Freeland kill, a UMBC setting error, a service ace from Sydney McKay and a kill from Bukovcan. HPU won set one, 25-19.

In set two, UMBC took a 4-1 advantage. Locking in on the attack, Remy Catojo set up the Panther offense to take an 8-6 lead before increasing the lead to 12-7. Lalonde, Bukovcan and Gabby Hill all contributed to the five-point lead with powerful hits.

UMBC attempted to close the gap and brought the game back within two-points at 12-10. High Point kept swinging on the attack and went back up by five with back-to-back kills from Lalonde to make it 18-13.

A few plays later, a big-time double block from Lalonde and Bukovcan extended the Panthers lead to seven late in the set, 22-15. Gia Padilla and Freeland sealed the set to give HPU the 25-20 win.

High Point dominated in set three and shut down the Retrievers. The Panthers quickly advanced to a 15-6 lead with a 10-2 run. High Point made it hard for UMBC to get in any type of groove which allowed the score to extend, 22-12. Two kills from Lalonde and a kill from Bukovcan finished the game. The Panthers took set two with ease, 25-14 to win the match 3-0.
