Head Coach Zach Haines: "We are pleased with the performance and fine with the result. It was a good step forward tonight and love where we are after three games. Without a few key guys, we had a lot of players really step up and show that our depth is there and will make a difference in what we can achieve this season. We will make good use of the week ahead to prepare for VCU."
Jefferson Amaya took an early strike off a free kick in the second minute to put a shot on the board for the Panthers, but the keeper got his gloves on the ball to turn the possession back to his offense.
About 10 minutes later, Charlotte's Xavier Holloway fired a shot that hit the crossbar and back spun its way to the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Celestin Blondel had a chance to score the equalizer in the 25th minute after breaking away from his defender off a throw in. Blondel took a left-footed strike that found the gloves of the diving keeper to his right.
Early in the second half, Charlotte netted its second goal of the night, but the referees called it back due to offsides to keep the Panthers down one goal.
As the clock was winding down and hit the 85th minute, the redshirt sophomore Lugo netted his third goal of the season to score the equalizer that High Point was looking for. Lugo took control of the ball after a heel pass form
Brendan Krueger and dribbled to his left as he found room to take a strike that found the back of the net.
Amaya and Lugo both had a pair of shots on goal backed by
Josh Caron in net with four saves as HPU and UNCC played to a 1-1 draw on Friday night.
Up Next: High Point will hit the road again for a matchup with Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m.
