Score: High Point 5, Winthrop 15
Records: High Point (38-17, 18-6) Winthrop (29-27, 13-11)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Another disappointing night with a conference regular season championship on the line for our guys. The good news is that we are in a great position to compete in the tournament, which is the championship that matters the most. We need to find the lessons from this weekend, learn from them, and turn the page to get ready for Thursday!"
The Eagles struck first in their first at-bats scoring one run on one hit that found the gap through the left side of the infield. Winthrop added another run to take a 2-0 lead in bottom of the third inning off a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
High Point took the lead in the fifth inning after scoring five runs on three hits. A bases loaded hit-by-pitch scored the first run, followed by
Brayden Simpson smacking a two-run double before
Jackson Melton and
Christian Smith both drove in a run.
Winthrop took a commanding lead as they plated 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth to jump out 14-5. HPU went down unscathed in the top of the sixth, before the Eagles rallied to score another run to take a 10-run lead into the seventh inning.
With a leadoff double by Simpson, HPU was not able to get a run across which led to a seven-run mercy rule leading to a, 15-5, victory for Winthrop.
Up Next: High Point will have a few days off before competing in the Big South Conference tournament next week which is being hosted at Truist Point in High Point.
