Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Pleased with the weekend and the results. I'm happy for our seniors, especially to finish their time here at this park on a good note. And for our team, we talk a lot about protecting home turf. I felt like we were able to accomplish that this year. To knock off a couple program records today, they're neat and exciting, but they're just steps along the way. They're not part of the goal that we ultimately have. It's good to recognize them and then put our nose back down and get back to work because we got a lot of to accomplish. I'm so proud of our guys and they deserve every accolade they get. We got to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for a short week to finish out this regular season the way that we want to."
Konni Durschlag smoked his second leadoff home run of the series and fifth of the season to hand HPU the early 1-0 lead. The top of the second saw GWU hit a two-run home run to regain the lead before
Frank Kelly went yard to take it right back to make it a 3-2 ball game after two innings.
The ball kept flying out of the park today as the Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game at three with a solo home run to right center in the top of the third.
Three Hillier broke the tie with a two-run homer over the right field fence for his eighth of the season, before another homer was hit by GWU to tie the game at five.
HPU regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth after
Landen Johnson roped a single to the gap scoring Durschlag from first.
Dalton Olsovsky relieved
Adrian Montenegro and put up a few zeros to allow the Panther bats to do some work.
The HPU offense extended its lead in the bottom of the seventh as
Frank Kelly singled through the left side with the bases loaded, followed by a wild pitch allowing another to score. With an 8-5 HPU lead in the eighth, GWU rallied with a two-run home run to make it a one run game.
A seven-run bottom of the eighth for the Panthers created the separation they needed. Hillier drove in two runs on a bases loaded ground-rule double, before Smith scored on a fielder's choice. Durschlag then smoked his second homer of the day for a three-run shot, followed by
Miggy Echazarreta making his way around the bases as he tagged up from third and scored on a fly ball to left field.
Olsovsky stayed out there and closed the game out for the 15-7 victory and the sweep over the Runnin' Bulldogs. Olsovsky was credited the win to improve his record to 2-1 on the season after throwing 5.1 innings of relief.
HPU finishes with a 23-7 record at Williard Stadium after the conclusion of the final regular-season game on home turf.
Up Next: HPU will face Wake Forest on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. That game will be played at Truist Point in High Point, N.C.
