Panthers Fall in Final Game of A10 Regular Season

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The High Point University men's lacrosse team traveled up north for its final game of the Atlantic 10 regular season at St. Bonaventure. The Panthers fell in the last four minutes of the game 10-9.

Site: Tom 80' and Michelle Marra Athletics Field Complex
Score: High Point 9, St. Bonaventure 10
Records: High Point (6-8, 3-2), St. Bonaventure (6-10, 1-4)

High Point's Owen Bunten scored the Panthers first goal early. Tommy Meehan followed up and dropped in HPU's second goal to make it 2-0, four minutes into the action. St. Bonaventure scored its first goal of the game at the 5:52 mark.

Both teams settled down and moved the ball up and down field running three minutes off the clock. Collin Rovere scored the Panthers third goal late in the first around the two-minute mark to put High Point ahead, 3-1 going into the second quarter.

The Panthers heated up in the second, going on a three-goal run in a span of five minutes. Two panthers scored their first career goals, one from the long stick faceoff wing, Caio Stephens and another from defensive midfielder Josh Weitzman. Bunten got fancy with it and scored a nasty behind the back goal to help High Point extend on a 6-1 advantage.

In the final minute of the first half, both teams found the back of the net and scored a goal to make it 7-2 at the break.

High Point scored first goal in the second half with Rovere's second goal of the game. From there, St. Bonaventure increased its offensive activity and pressed on a three-goal run to close the game to within three goals, 8-5.

Slowing the Bonnies' momentum, Rovere scored his third goal of the game for his second hat trick of the season at the 5:58 mark in the third quarter. Unfortunately, the HPU offense went cold while St. Bonaventure found its spark. The Bonnies went on a 5-0 run from the end of the third quarter to the four-minute mark in the fourth, taking the lead 10-9.

In the Panthers final possession, High Point railed off two shots but was unable to connect and find the back of the net to tie or take the lead, falling 10-9 in the end.

Bunten now sits three goals away from breaking the HPU rookie single-season goal record with a team-high 35 goals on the season.
