HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team dropped its mid-week matchup with UNC Greensboro, 12-10, on Tuesday night.
Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 10, UNCG 12
Records: High Point (12-5), UNCG (7-9)
Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Obviously disappointing, we just did not do enough to win the game. We left a lot of low hanging fruit opportunities. It is not rocket science why we did not win a game like that. We didn't do enough in every aspect, and it wasn't good enough."
Despite scoring 10 runs tonight, HPU went cold scoring only two runs in the final six innings which is what ultimately led to the loss.
Nick Semon pitched in relief for High Point and was able to silent the Spartans offense while he was out there for the 2.2 innings he pitched. Semon only surrendered one hit, while striking out three batters to try and bring some life back into the Panthers bats.
The Panthers got on the board early piling on seven runs just in the first three innings.
Konni Durschlag poked two balls over the fence for a 3-for-6 day at the plate. He led off the game with a home run and then went on to smack another in the fifth inning.
Jake McCarter also joined Durschlag in the long ball category tonight as he has now hit a home run in each of his last four games.
Miggy Echazarreta had himself a 3-for-3 day with two walks as he also blasted a solo home run in the third inning.
A big sixth inning for the Spartans is what helped them make that final push to grab the lead. Scoring three runs in that frame took a two-run lead on three hits. In the bottom half of the frame,
Christian Smith flied out to right field allowing a runner to score to cut the deficit to one.
The Spartans answered right back in the top of ninth to push their lead back to two after an RBI single to right field. UNCG would have taken a three-run lead, but
Jack Clark in left field was able to field the grounder and throw a hose to the plate to get the runner out.
High Point went down unscathed in the bottom of the ninth as the Spartans pulled off the win on the road, 12-10, on Tuesday night at Williard Stadium.
Up Next: High Point will open Big South Conference action as they host Charleston Southern for a three-game series. The first game is scheduled for Friday March 14 at 6:00 p.m.
