High Point Falls to Rattlers on Saturday Afternoon

MACON, Ga.  – The High Point University baseball team dropped its game against Florida A&M University, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.

Site: OrthoGeorgia Park
Score: High Point 3, Florida A&M 5
Records: High Point (8-3), Florida A&M (3-7)

Head Coach Joey Hammond: "Another disappointing day. We didn't play well enough to win a game against anyone. We had some selfish moments today that we've got to correct. We need to take a deeper look at how we approach one of these days because they're numbered. Overall disappointed, not with the effort, but just the execution or lack thereof. I feel like these last two days our guys are incredibly individual based, specifically as position players. I felt like Dylan (Story) threw the ball really well and had an opportunity. I am not going to give us credit for fighting at the end, that's the standard. We clearly need to have a gut check and get back to playing team baseball."

Dylan Story got the ball this afternoon as he brought the heat pitching six innings, allowing just one run on one hit, and striking out seven batters. Adrian Montenegro relieved Story in the seventh inning as the Rattlers started to hit Montenegro and plated four runs on four hits.

A scoreless game through three frames had both pitchers dealing. The Rattlers brought home their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a single to right field. After the one run, Story threw two more shutout innings to bring the game to the seventh inning.

FAMU extended its lead to 4-0 after plating three more runs on three hits. High Point had an answer in the top of the eighth as Christian Smith and Konni Durschlag both singled to get things going. After James Murphy drew a walk to load the bases, Brayden Simpson reached on a fielder's choice to score the first run of the afternoon for High Point. Two more walks loaded the bases and scored another run for High Point. With Simpson on third base, Jackson Melton flew one to right field for a SAC fly to allow the runner to tag from third and score. High was quickly down one run with one more chance at the plate in the top of the ninth.

A lead off home run in the bottom of the eighth put FAMU back up two runs, 5-3. HPU went down in order in the top of the ninth to fall to the Rattlers on Saturday afternoon.

Up Next: High Point will face Mercer tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch to wrap up the weekend in Macon.
