Panthers Open Big Easy Classic With a Win

WESTWEGO, La. — The High Point University women's basketball team picked up its sixth win of the season on Friday afternoon, taking down University of Louisiana, 77–62, in the opening game of the Big Easy Classic.

Site: Alario Center
Score: High Point 77, Louisiana 62
Records: High Point (6-1), Louisiana (0-6)

Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "Macy [Spencer] was incredible today. She caught the ball ready to shoot and knocked them down. She also did a great job on the boards for us on the defensive side. Besides a few execution errors down the stretch I'm really happy with how we played."

Behind a red-hot shooting day from Macy Spencer and another balanced team effort, the Panthers controlled the game from start to finish. Spencer fueled the early momentum, knocking down six threes in the opening quarter as HPU built a 26–18 lead. She stayed locked in all afternoon, finishing with a career-high 31-points and nine made threes.

High Point's offense clicked throughout the contest, shooting 47 percent from the field and hitting a season-high 14 three-pointers. The Panthers also generated key second-chance opportunities, turning 10 offensive rebounds into 18 points, and outscored the Ragin' Cajuns 28–20 in the paint.

Aaliyah Collins once again set the tone on both ends, contributing nine points, eight assists, and four rebounds while helping the Panthers force 14 Louisiana turnovers. Brecken Snotherly added eight points and eight rebounds, and Nevaeh Zavala chipped in eight points and three assists. HPU's bench provided a steady spark, with Peyton Gerdes, Dom Nesland, and Anna Hager combining for 18 points.

With the victory, High Point improves to 6-1 continuing one of the strongest starts in the programs Division I history.

Up Next: The Panthers return to the Alario Center tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. EST for a meeting with the College of Charleston.
