HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's rowing team completed its first regatta of the year at the High Point Autumn Rowing Festival on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Jessica Deitrick: "Today the team had tough competition and we gained valuable experience racing with them. We are looking forward to training hard and preparing for our next race on Saturday in Jacksonville, FL. With every practice and regatta we complete we are keeping our long term goals for spring in our minds."
High Point started the morning with a head-to-head race against University of Edinburgh. The Panthers sent out their Varsity One and Varsity Two boats in the 11:05 a.m. race. The Varsity One boat led by the coxswain,
Grayson Williams pushed the Panthers to a second-place finish with a 0:17:034 time behind the 0:16:481 Edinburgh 1v. High Point's 2v wasn't that far behind the first two boats by a time of 0:18:051 led by
Arianna Ording at coxswain.
Before the race with University of Oxford, HPU had its collegiate 4+ place second behind North Carolina State University with a time of 0:20:408. That boat saw
Alesandra Belongea at coxswain leading
Cate Ward,
Bria Henry,
Annabelle Everding, and
Alexandra Laufer to the finish line.
The afternoon slate saw HPU's one and two boats go head-to-head against Oxford. Coming in second and third place, the varsity one boat with
Carolyn Fox at coxswain registered a final time of 0:12:085, just 0.633 seconds behind Oxford as the Panthers 2v boat saw a 0:12:367 time with
Lucia Calvert at coxswain.
A 300-meter seven boat dash is how the afternoon ended as both High Point's boats lined up with Duke University, Edinburgh, and Oxford. The Panthers were able to hold their own up against the other five boats but would place outside the top three.
