"It was a great team effort," Assistant Coach
Christina Wakefield said. "There was a lot of adjustment and the team did well with changing and listening to the plan, while believing in what we're doing. We're looking forward to the next game to continue with what we've been building on the whole season. It's not the result we wanted, but we're looking forward to the next game."
The first half of play saw both teams go scoreless into the half as
Aubrey McKessy was keeping the Highlanders off the board with one save on eight shots. The Panthers offense had a few early chances to go up 1-0 off a corner kick but were booted away by Radford.
Sabba Haghgoo had the best chance in the 11th minute as she fired a shot but was saved by the keeper going to her right.
Radford started the second half with a goal in the 50th minute by Lilly Short to open the scoring for the Highlanders. Not even 10-minutes later, Short buried her second of the match to give them the 2-0 advantage.
As the clock was winding down in the second half, the Panthers had multiple opportunities to put one home off a few corner kicks. High Point drew a foul in the 88th minute which saw
Joellie Giquinto boot a free kick into the box. The Radford keeper punched the ball up, and was surprised as Haghgoo was right there to head it home off the deflection. Haghgoo tallied her first goal of the season to bring HPU back within one late in the match.
The clock hit zeros before the Panthers were able to make another push as Radford took the 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.
Up Next: High Point will host UNC Asheville on Saturday, October 18 at 4:00 p.m.
