Site: Templeton Center
Score: High Point 75, Presbyterian 47
Records: High Point (9-10, 4-2), Presbyterian (4-14, 2-3)
Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "I think our girls did a good job of coming out ready to go in the first quarter. We have been talking about having fourth quarter mentality for the full 40 minutes, and we came out focused and ready to make plays. I think we played team defense forcing 22 turnovers and 11 steals. A lot of that came from helping each other. I was happy with our effort on the defensive end and then it turned into points on offense. 18 assists on 26 made shots, so we're sharing the ball and its fun basketball to play and fun basketball to watch."
Right from the get-go, High Point dominated the floor and played Panther basketball. HPU held a double-digit lead for much of the afternoon led by
Lauren Scott and
Nevaeh Zavala who both recorded 17 points.
Nakyah Terrell and
Dom Nesland both found themselves in double figures as well.
High Point led by eight points after the first quarter as they took the lead right back from the Blue Hose.
Chana Paxixe knocked down a three pointer to tie the game at seven before Scott hit a jumper to go ahead by one score. A good three pointer from
Jaleesa Lawrence gave High Point it's eight-point lead at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The Panther lead started to expand into double figures in the second quarter after Scott dropped a three pointer to start them off. With 7:37 left on the clock, Zavala hit a three pointer to take a 14-point lead. High Point took its biggest lead of the game after Scott hit both of her free throws to go up 16, 35-19. A good jumper by Presbyterian took them to the break down 35-21.
HPU went on a 9-3 run to start the second half as Zavala and Scott both knocked down some buckets. Terrell gave the Panthers a 20-point lead with 6:23 on the clock as she clutched up on a layup in the paint. Right before the buzzer went off in the third quarter, Terrell swished one from beyond the arc to take the teams 22-point lead into the fourth quarter.
The gas was never let off in the fourth quarter as HPU remained a 20-plus point lead for the majority of the last 10 minutes. The lead kept climbing after HPU held the Blue Hose scoreless for the last four minutes of the game. High Point scored seven more points in that time span. Capped off by
Olivia Medford hitting both of her free throws to hand High Point the, 75-47 victory on Saturday afternoon.
