ISLE of PALMS, S.C. – Three peat!
For the third year in a row, High Point University has been crowned the George F "Buddy" Sasser Cup champions as the Big South Conference's top overall athletic institution during the 2023-24 year. Conference officials presented the Cup to HPU President Nido R. Qubein at the Big South Meetings Thursday night in Isle of Palms, S.C.
Not only did the Panthers win their third consecutive Sasser Cup but High Point swept all three all-sports trophies, winning the sixth straight Women's All-Sports Cup and the first-ever Men's All-Sports Cup. HPU joins only two other schools (Liberty and Coastal Carolina) who have won all three awards in a single year in the Big South's 38-year history.
"Wow an amazing year for our High Point University student-athletes, coaches, and staff, HPU Vice President and Athletic Director Dan Hauser said. "To win 12 conference championships in 2023-24 and then to sweep the Sasser Cup and Men's/Women's All Sport Trophies for the first time in school history is tremendous. HPU joins only two other universities to achieve this feat in Big South Conference history. We have a special athletic department team, and these achievements signify their outstanding work. Go Panthers!"
High Point won an extraordinary 12 conference championship: volleyball (regular and tournament), women's cross country, men's soccer (regular and tournament), men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's basketball (regular season), women's basketball (regular season), and baseball (tournament).
The Panthers were two points higher than every Big South school in the Sasser Cup Standings, scoring 8.65 in the overall leaderboard as Charleston Southern (6.65) and UNC Asheville (5.85) respectively followed.
HPU continued its reign of being the only active Big South institution to win the Women's All-Sports Cup behind 8.63 points compared to Charleston Southern (6.83) and Radford (6.18). The Men's All-Sports Trophy comes to High Point for the first time after the Panthers' 8.68 points surpassed UNC Asheville (7.14) and Charleston Southern (6.38).
