This Week in HPU Athletics (4/15-4/21)

HIGH POINT, N.C. — This week in High Point University Athletics, women's golf is on the hunt for its first conference championship while baseball takes on North Carolina A&T before matching up against Presbyterian in a three-game series. Women's lacrosse takes on two Big South foes on the road while track and field stays close for the Wake Forest Invitational. Men's golf follows the women at the Big South Tournament and men's lacrosse takes on Hobart College in New York this weekend.

High Point enters the postseason as the No. 1 seed on the hunt for a conference championship after finishing runner-up last year. Ella Perna will hold the one spot at the conference tournament followed by Anna Howerton, Danielle Suh, Julia McLaughlin, and Maddie Hensley. Ana-Elena Kusters will attend the tournament as an alternate.

After defeating Queens in a midweek matchup, High Point moved on to win a three-game series against Big South foe, Longwood University, 2-1. The Panthers took the first two games, 6-3, and 4-1. Charlie Klingler started the first game off with a home run, scoring Adam Stuart in the process for a 2-0 advantage in the first. Gus Hughes took the win for his fourth of the season. High Point was hot in game two, taking a 3-0 advantage after three innings with some help from Cael Chatham who hit one out of the park in the third inning. Brett Wozniak is credited with the win, giving him a 4-1 record for the season. 


North Carolina A&T State University last stepped on the field to face off against William & Mary University in a three-game series. The Aggies started off strong, taking the first game 8-4, with pitcher Coley Kilpatrick taking his fifth win of the season. North Carolina A&T lost its touch in the remaining two games, falling to William & Mary, 7-4, and 10-5, losing the series, 2-1. 

The last time these two teams met, High Point defeated North Carolina A&T following a strong seventh inning where the Panthers scored five runs to take the victory, 6-2. HPU currently holds a 29-12 record over the Aggies since the first matchup in 2000. 

Presbyterian College last played Winthrop University in a three-game series. The Blue Hose decimated Winthrop, taking the first game but a whopping 20-3. Daniel Eagen was credited with the win giving him a 4-0 record. Presbyterian continued to dominate in game two, winning 13-1 after a stellar eighth inning where the Blue Hose scored eight points. Charlie McDaniel was given the win for his sixth of the season. The third game was close with the Eagles leading by two for most of the game, however, Presbyterian usurped them in the sixth with three runs to take the dub, 4-3. Sean Hollister was the winning pitcher, giving him a 1-1 record for the season. 

High Point decimated the Blue Hose, 11-6, the last time the two teams met on the field. HPU holds a 22-15 record against Presbyterian since the first matchup in 2009. 

Women's Lacrosse

HPU pulled out its fourth-consecutive win with 20 or more points for senior night this past weekend against Radford University. The Panthers came out hot, scoring 14 goals in the first half. Jordan Miles led the team in goals and draw controls with five and eight, respectively, while Esprit Cha, Mandy Brockamp, and Kay Rosselli all contributed with hat tricks. Sydney Martin was aggressive on defense for High Point, picking up five ground balls and causing four turnovers. Joy Coffey and Ava Welsh split time in the cage with both securing two saves each. The Panthers pulled out a 20-10 victory over the Highlanders, leaving them 4-1 in the Big South Conference. 

Wofford College last hit the field to face off against Winthrop in a mid-week matchup. The first quarter was close with the Terriers holding a 6-5 lead until Wofford hit a 5-0 run to take the lead at the half, 12-7. Wofford held strong throughout the second half, winning the game, 20-16. 

High Point has only gone up against Wofford College twice with the first matchup occurring two years ago. Last time out, HPU defeated the Terriers 18-10 for a 2-0 win streak. 

Furman University also played Winthrop last, with their matchup occurring on the weekend. Furman decimated the Eagles with a 9-0 run that started at the end of the second and concluded in the fourth quarter. Winthrop managed to net four consecutive goals, but couldn't catch up to the Paladins, leading to a Furman victory, 16-9. 

High Point narrowly fell to Furman the last time the two teams went head-to-head. Furman had a strong start in the first half, netting seven goals in the first quarter and five in the second for a 12-5 lead. The Panthers worked their way back in the second half, scoring five goals per quarter, but couldn't quite net the equalizer, leading to a HPU loss, 16-15. The recent loss against Furman is the only time the Panthers have lost out of the four games the two teams have played against each other starting in 2018.

HPU enters postseason play at the Big South Conference Championship Tournament, slated to begin the day after the women's golf match play round. Gregor Meyer holds the one spot followed by Fred Roberts IV, Grady Newton, Charlie Barr, and Miller Carr. Jay Smith will also attend the tournament as an alternate. 

Track and Field

HPU had a busy weekend as the team split up to attend four different meets. At the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, Chris Van Niekerk represented the Panthers in men's shot put and discus. Van Niekerk placed ninth in shot put with a mark of 17.49m, and 22nd in discus with a throw of 52.94m. Letizia Jessica Marsico represented the women in throws, securing 14th in shot put with a mark of 14.15m, and 23rd in discus with a mark of 44.74m. In the running events,  Deron Dudley placed fifth in the 100m dash with a time of 10.44 seconds while A'lajuwan Robinson placed 10th with a time of 10.49 seconds. Robinson later placed sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 21.37 seconds. Pole vault closed out the night for the Panthers as Auriane Viola tied for ninth place after clearing 3.91m. Reid Holloway represented the men, placing 11th with a height of 5.01m.

Cole Wilson went to work at Bryan Clay Invitational as he secured seven personal bests in the decathlon. Wilson scored a personal best in the 100m (11.03), long jump (7.21m), shot put (14.01m), 400m (50.42), pole vault (4.80m), and 1500m (4:48.21). Wilson's performance led him to break the program record with 7431 points. Wilson wasn't the only one to break records at the Bryan Clay Invitational as both Katie Taylor and Othmane El Gharissi both set program records in the 5000m. Taylor ran a 16:18.62 to place 13th overall while El Gharissi placed eighth with a time of 13:50.42.

A handful of athletes from the men's distance team competed at the Duke Invitational on Friday night. In the men's 3000m steeplechase, Jake Tarosky came in second with a personal best time of 9:02.37.

The athletes at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate had a busy weekend as they competed at the Beach Invitational as well this past weekend.  Dae'Nitra Hester placed eighth in the 400m dash with a time of 55.11. Dudley came in eighth place as well but in the 100m dash with a time of 10.29. Lindsay Cooper rocked the hurdle events, placing 12th in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.73 and 13th in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.57. Auriane Viola tied for fourth in the women's pole vault, clearing 4.06m, for her highest jump this season.

Men's Lacrosse

HPU last faced off against No. 19 University of Richmond. After the half, the Panthers attempted to bounce back, but Richmond held on, 9-5. Jack VanOverbeke led the Panthers with two goals and an assist. John Adams and Tyler Baird were aggressive on defense, securing three ground balls each to lead the team. Zack Overend represented HPU in the net with nine saves.

Hobart College last stepped on the field to face off against Saint Joseph's University. SJU had a stellar start with a 5-0 run into the second quarter. Hobart managed to net three in the second, but Saint Joseph's held the lead at half, 8-3. Hobart managed to outscore SJU in the third, 3-2, but couldn't quite come back, resulting in a Hobart loss, 12-7. 

High Point has only played Hobart once before, which occurred last year in early April. The game was tight with HPU holding a two-point lead at half. Hobart started to come back in the second half, but couldn't quite hit the equalizer, leading to a narrow Panther victory, 14-13.
