BRIGHTON, Mass. – High Point University men's high jumper
Andrew Taylor represented HPU in his first ever NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday afternoon at the TRACK at the New Balance facility. Taylor placed eighth overall for the program's first-ever indoor All-American honor.
"Drew is a phenomenal competitor, and was rewarded by his consistency this season," coach Hillary Holmes stated. "It was not until a medical scratch occurred that he knew he was in the meet, and his consistent season won him the tie break at 2.19m to be selected. I'm extremely proud of Drew. He brought great intensity and composure to the competition, and there was no doubt with how he competes that he could go from last seed to First Team All-American. A performance to remember for sure. I know he is hungry for even more outdoors!
The event opened with the first jump at a height of 2.10m. Taylor cleared it on his first attempt with ease.
Moving on to the 2.15m bar, Taylor excelled over again on his first attempt.
On the 2.18m bar, Taylor missed on his first attempt. He locked in on his second attempt and cleared it.
On the 2.21m attempts Taylor was going for a new personal best height, but after giving it all he had he was unable to land a clear.
Taylor earned an eighth place finish out of 16 competitors to earn the programs first All-American honor at an NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship.
"Two first team all Americans in two days is pretty special," Head Cach
Mike Esposito said. "Sydney and Andrew are amazing kids and great competitors. In addition, Coach Houston and Coach Holmes are among the brightest young coaches in the country. Also, a Big shoutout to
Drew Sanchez and Tab Formon. We have incredible support at HPU!"
