CLINTON, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the High Point University volleyball team swept Presbyterian College 3-0 and clinched the No. 1 seed for the Big South Tournament which will be hosted at High Point in two weeks.
The Panthers were led on the attack by Élodie Lalonde with 13 kills and
Dylan Maberry with 12 kills.
BayLea Sparks picked up a team-high five blocks which helped her reach her 100th block this season.
Presbyterian took the initial lead in set one at 6-3, but not for long. Three straight kills from Lalonde tied the set at six all and paved the way for HPU to gain the lead. The Panthers took their largest lead of the set after a PC attack error at 18-14 and later stretched on a six-point lead following three straight kills. Sparks hammered one down in the middle to make it 23-16 before a kill on the outside from Maberry and another kill from Sparks gave HPU the first set win, 25-17.
In set two, Maberry helped High Point to an early 7-2 lead with big swings on the outside. There was no stopping the Panthers offense once it got going. HPU took a 14-6 lead after registering back-to-back blocks from
Allie Gray and
Eve Wilson while also forcing mistakes from the Presbyterian attack.
Jordyn Schilling served in an ace to make it 16-7 followed by two middles kills from Sparks to make it 18-9. Presbyterian made a small run to score three points and close the gap six but HPU pressed on and scored in pairs to take the 25-16 win.
In the third set, High Point opened with a 5-2 lead. The Blue Hose closed it to one point at 6-5 before the Panthers stretched on two runs. The first run was a 4-0 run to make it 10-5 and the second run was a 5-0 run to make it 17-8.
With such a large lead, the Panthers were able to coast to the final point and take the 25-13 win with a kill from
Jayde Shelton. HPU managed to hold Presbyterian to under 15 points in the final set and secure the team's 11
th sweep of the season.
