HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University volleyball hosted Gardner-Webb University on Senior Day Saturday afternoon. The Panthers recognized three seniors and two graduate students prior to the first serve, including
Allie Gray,
Arica Davis,
Nicole Swindle,
Jayde Shelton and
Dylan Maberry. High Point picked up its 11th conference win this season and 10 sweep overall.
High Point cruised through set one in record time with a 25-12 win to start the match. HPU earned points from all areas of the attack, led by Maberry with seven kills in the opening set. Shelton,
BayLea Sparks and Élodie Lalonde all contributed three kills apiece. A crowd wowing dive from
Brooke Briscoe on the back row helped extend High Point's lead to nine as Maberry capped the point with a kill on the outside to make it 17-8.
Ella Grace Holloway joined in on the action late in the set and landed a kill for HPU's 22nd point. Two mistakes by Gardner-Webb and a kill from
Kennedy Louisell gave the Panthers the 25-12 win.
HPU continued its field day on the attack in the second set, making it difficult for GWU to return clean balls. After a service ace from
Jordyn Schilling to make it 16-8, the Runnin' Bulldogs were forced to call a timeout. Following the timeout,
Addison Freeland entered the set and tallied an assist to Maberry and a double block with Shelton to make it 20-8. Freeland later knocked down a kill from the middle helping the Panthers take set two with a 25-17 win.
In set three the Panthers leaked out on a 9-3 lead with the help of Sparks on the front line. The connection between Gray and Sparks was in sync for multiple slide attacks from the right side.
Kea Whillock laid out for a pancake to keep a tip from GWU alive, leading to a Lalonde kill for a Panthers point. High Point stretched on a 10-point lead with an outside kill from Louisell to make it 18-8.
Gardner-Webb picked up three late points but a Louisell kill followed by a freshman duo double block with Freeland and Lalonde captured the final points of the match to win 25-12, holding GWU to under 15 points for the second set.
