High Point Falls to New Hampshire in First-Time Matchup

DURHAM, NH – The High Point University volleyball team played its second mid-week game on Wednesday night with a matchup at the University of New Hampshire for the first time in program history. The Panthers were unable to take the advantage over the Wildcats and fell in three sets.

Over the three sets High Point was led across the attack by Dylan Maberry and Arica Davis with seven kills apiece as Davis posted a .636 hitting night. Davis was all over the net along with BayLea Sparks who each picked up four block assists. Allie Gray and Hannah Hawkins split time setting in the 6-2 rotation as both combined for 25 assists.

In the first set, New Hampshire took an early 4-0 run to take the 7-4 lead. High Point answered and tied the set at 10 all with a Davis kill. UNH stretched on another run going up 15-10 after knocking in multiple kills and service aces. The Wildcats took their largest lead of the set at 24-16. A kill by Eve Wilson sparked a four-point run for the Panthers but a kill from New Hampshire ended the set, 25-20.

The second set started out close as the two teams exchanged points back-and-forth. High Point tied the set at seven all and 10 all before taking  a one point lead with a double block from Sparks and Maberry. Kennedy Louisell knocked in a shot to make it 16-13 which was the Panthers largest lead of the set.

UNH answered with a 5-0 run to take back the lead at 18-16. From that point the Panthers trailed by a point or two. Back-to-back bombs from Maberry kept HPU within one point at 23-22. The Wildcats finished the set with two back-to-back kills of their own.

Both teams kept battling at the net in set three. The Panthers trailed the Wildcats early, but a four-point swing tied the set at 16 all. Davis crushed a kill to keep the Panthers within one before a Wilcats error tied the set again at 18 all. UNH pressed on a 5-0 run to go up 23-18. High Point picked up a kill and a block but a double block from New Hampshire sealed the game at 25-20.
