Panthers Draw in Matchup With Elon

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University men's soccer team walked away with a 2-2 draw in the matchup against Elon Wednesday night.

Site: Vert Stadium
Score: High Point 2, Elon 2
Records: High Point (1-1-2), Elon (1-2-2)

Head Coach Zach Haines: "We are disappointed with the performance tonight. You cannot go up 2-0 in the first 20 minutes and then bring the work rate and mentality that we did for the next 70. We let things slip away and did not step up and grab the game back. It is a wakeup call for us, and I am confident that we will respond on Saturday vs UNCG."

It wasn't long before Jefferson Amaya was going to net his first of the season. It came in fashion of a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Elon's keeper, Tomasz Wroblewski guessed diving to the right but Amaya sent it to the bottom left of the net.

The Panthers wasted no time. In the 17th minute, Finn McRobb notched his second goal of the year off a throw in from Alex Abril. The ball deflected off an Elon player, McRobb then controlled it out of the air and blasted it to the top of the net. The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, Ben Rosenblatt got Elon on the board. Cut the Panthers lead to one.

The second half was back and forth between both teams with Elon taking most of the control. It wasn't until the 82nd minute that brought Elon a penalty shot. The freshman, Justin Stewart made a great save diving to his left to deflect the ball away.

A minute later, Elon found the back of the net off a corner kick to tie it at two. Franc Gamir Quer for the Phoenix took the rebound off Stewart and got the equalizer for Elon.

Up Next: The Panthers are back at Vert Stadium to face off against UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Sept 16 at 7 p.m.
