Last time the Panthers stepped onto the course was for the Big South Conference Championships in April. Charlie Barr led the team with a 2-under par 214, landing him in third place. HPU returners Gregor Meyer and Grady Newton played as well, placing 26th and T30, respectively. Meyer scored a 5-over 77 and Newton carded a 3-over par 75. Rounding out the returners was Burch Harrison who landed in 37th with a 1-over par 73. The boys' performance led to HPU placing T6 out of the nine teams at the tournament.

"I've been looking forward to getting this season started since we left Big South Championships last year," HPU Men's Golf Head Coach Todd Eckstein said. "I had a good feeling about the camaraderie of this group before they got back to campus. All of our guys made improvements over the summer, highlighted by Gregor's win at the Pennsylvania State Amateur and qualification for the US Amateur, which Charlie Barr also played in. I can't wait to see how our talent comes out in tournaments this year."

The River Run Collegiate golf tournament is hosted by Davidson, which saw a successful season last year with its fourth NCAA Regional appearance and its third straight A-10 Championship. Additionally, the Wildcats are ranked No. 91 in Golfstat's NCAA DI rankings for this season.

"River Run will be a challenging opener for us," Eckstein said. "Davidson has been a perennial NCAA tournament team for some time and their home track is long and demanding. We're ready for that test and I'm excited about the group we're taking."

Aside from Davidson, Coach Eckstein also cited Eastern Carolina University as a tough opponent. High Point met ECU on the course twice last year. Their first matchup was at the Grandover Intercollegiate in Greensboro, N.C., where East Carolina finished in fifth and HPU in eighth. Davidson also attended this tournament and landed a third place finish. Three months later, the Pirates and the Panthers met again at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. ECU finished in sixth and High Point in 10th.

"I'm looking to stay hot," HPU student-athlete Gregor Meyer said. "I had a long summer of tournament golf and have tried to stay in that same mindset of readiness coming into this season. I have high hopes set for myself and this team."

Meyer will be first in the lineup for the Panthers followed by Grady Newton, Miller Carr, Fred Roberts IV, and Burch Harrison. Freshman Jay Smith will also be attending the tournament as an independent player.

"The squad is definitely excited to get back together and play some golf," Meyer added. "We're looking forward to this first tournament as a group. We've been putting in the prep work and sticking to the process. We are looking to have a good result next week and for the season."
