Site: Williard Stadium
Score: High Point 2 , USC Upstate 4
Records: High Point (7-14, 1-4), USC Upstate (15-9, 2-0)
Kicking off the first few innings with deep yard balls, both teams opened the game crossing the plate with home runs. The Spartans punched first with a two-run homer over the left field wall while the Panthers responded in the bottom of the second with a single run homer over right field from
Charlie Klingler.
Through the third, fourth and fifth innings both teams witnessed minimal action at the plate. The Panthers registered one off the wall hit from
Brayden Simpson in the bottom of the fifth, while strong defense from HPU held the Spartans hitless. A big diving play from shortstop
Adam Stuart in the top of the fifth secured the third out for the Panthers.
USC Upstate scored their third run of the day off another home run over left field to take the 3-1 lead.
Gus Hughes pitched through 6.1 innings, collecting five strikeouts from the 28 batters faced.
Sam Garcia came in for Hughes in the top of the seventh with one out. A strikeout for Garcia and fly out to left field ends the top of the seventh.
The Spartans went long again for their third home run of the game to make it 4-1 in the top of the eighth.
Simpson returned the call in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run over left field, tagging his first home run of his career. The Panthers entered the ninth inning down 4-2.
Lock down fielding in the top of the ninth kept the Spartans from getting any hits. With one opportunity left to change the outcome of the game, Stuart got on from an error by the pitcher. An unlucky line drive at the Spartans first baseman resulted in a double play to end the game.
Up Next: The Panthers and Spartans round out the weekend series at Williard Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
