"I mean, we weren't good down the stretch," Head Coach
Chelsea Banbury stated. "We made too many mistakes, little mistakes here and there. They ended up costing us points. Your up by nine and we turn the ball over, give up threes to shooters and we foul when we shoudn't. We fouled 20 feet from the basket and it ended up being free throws, all of that hurt us."
High Point started off a little slow, it took a few minutes for the momentum to kick in. Being down the majority of the first half, HPU fought their way back to be down by one heading into the third quarter.
Lauren Bevis started the night off for the Panthers by draining a three from the corner. Bevis contributed a good amount to the comeback HPU had in the first half. The first lead of the game for the Panthers came late in second quarter as Bevis knocked down a jumper to give the team a 1-point lead.
Start of the third quarter,
Nakyah Terrell put one in from beyond the arc to close the gap to 32-30. Anna Hager showed up and showed out big time to hand a 41-39 lead back over to High Point as she drove the basket for an and one.
The start of the fourth quarter seemed very promising as High Point knocked down five three pointers in a row. Bevis drained two,
Faith Price had two, and
Callie Scheier had one. HPU was up 61-58 at the end of that stretch.
Just a few minutes later, Scheier knocked down another three to go up by nine. Norfolk State then went on a 9-0 run to tie the game up to send it to overtime.
High Point struggled to find the basket in overtime, Norfolk State went on a scoring streak to extend the lead as the clock wound down to the final buzzer.
Lauren Bevis recorded 29 points, going 6-14 from beyond the arc and 9-11 at the line. Price tallied for 12 points, going 4-5 from beyond the arc.
