HPU Earns Thursday Night Win Over Johnson C. Smith

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's basketball team came out on top against Johnson C. Smith University 61-50 Thursday night.

Site: Qubein Center
Score: High Point 61, Johnson C. Smith 50
Records: High Point (4-4), Johnson C. Smith (1-4)

Head Coach Chelsea Banbury: "I give credit to Johnson C. Smith's effort. They came out ready to play, playing with confidence. They made us earn it tonight. I am not happy with our effort on either end of the floor. I think we took tonight off, we didn't take it seriously, and did not defend. We didn't move, or run our offense on the other end of the floor. I've talked a lot to our team about playing one way no matter who we are playing, and we did not do that tonight."

High Point held the lead since the start and never looked back. At times, the Golden Bulls were within a few but HPU held their own.

Nakyah Terrell led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. Terrell played just shy of the full 40 minutes with 38 minutes of playing time. She was able to shoot .500 from the field and went 3-3 from the line.

Bukky Akinsola got the start tonight in the Purple and White. Akinsola started the night off draining a three from the corner to get HPU on the board in the first quarter. She capped the night off with 12 points, four rebounds, and one assist.

The ball may not have found the basket tonight for No. 10 but, Callie Scheier was able to come up huge off the boards. Scheier recorded a career high eight rebounds. She was not the only one who came up big on the defensive side of the ball. Nevaeh Zavala was able to get up and swat the ball down as the Golden Bulls were going up for a shot.

Claire Wyatt drained a few three pointers to extend the Panthers lead late in the game. Akinsola fed Wyatt the ball at the top of the three-point line, she knocked it down to take the lead by seven.

High Point recorded a total of 40 rebounds, allowing for all 10 of the girls who played tonight to tally at least one.

Up Next: High Point will take a trip out west to face Colorado State on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Tip is set for 8:30 EST | 6:30 MTN.
